Halloween Walk
This years Halloween walk was a mixed bag of fun and some disappointment. Disappointing only because the threat of rain forced the walk inside the nature center, and not on a trail like it was in previous years.
Fortunately enough…all of the volunteers stepped up and played the hand they were dealt offering the community a great event.
Once inside the nature center Marine Park Civic was offering free group pictures that they would print for you on the spot.
Local politicians State Senator Marty Golden and Councilman Lew Fidler were handing out apples and candy. After getting candy and apples for the kids, family’s walked into the nature center yard where characters were, then out the path to the street with more characters along the way.

Lott House: A Peek Inside
As part of this year’s Open House New York, I had the opportunity to visit the Hendrick Lott House. Although the exterior of the house has been fully restored, the interior still needs further cleaning and restoration. Nonetheless, the rooms that were available for viewing offered visitors a sense of what life must have been like for the Lott family. On display were artifacts produced by excavations of the property as well as objects/tools that were located in the basement of the house:

“It’s My Park Day” – The Lott House is looking for volunteers to donate some time and elbow grease for a clean up on Saturday October 24th from 10:00 – 2:00 PM. Please call (718) 336-7343 for more information. Service credit will be given for students!

Third and Seven

I must admit, the opening of Third and Seven on Quentin Road and East 37th Street is bittersweet. Although I am very happy that a new restaurant/bar has opened in the neighborhood, it is with much sadness that I bid adieu to Flood’s Tavern. Although I have never been in Flood’s, I consider it a staple of my childhood because I would pass it every day walking to and from school. Always curious as to what went on inside, this unattainable place (for a child at least) never ceased to pique my interest.
I am not sure why I never went into Flood’s. Many may find this a ridiculous question, but considering the fact that I have frequented the other “old man dive bars” in the neighborhood, it is not without merit. I guess a part of me assumed it would always be there. And for my entire lifetime it has been. A preservationist at heart, I have fondness for places of kitsch and recognition – and for me, Flood’s will always be synonymous with an element of my childhood. I am sure many others have similar, if not more fascinating stories of places we have lost in the neighborhood throughout the years.
However, Flood’s is gone so let us welcome Third and Seven! Always one to support a local business, a friend and I dined at Third and Seven last week. The bar was fairly crowded and almost every table in the dining area was occupied. The bar/restaurant has been compared to Nora’s and the reviews I have heard from those within the neighborhood have been mostly favorable. Overall, we were pleased with our dining selections and the prices were comparable with other neighborhood eateries. It is nice to have another dining/drinking option in the neighborhood – support your local businesses!
Any other comments/reviews for Third and Seven?

openhousenewyork features the Lott House: October 10 and 11!!
Saturday October 10th and Sunday October 11th marks the 7th annual openhousenewyork. The weekend is America’s largest architecture and design event, offering admission to some of New York’s most coveted sites that are usually closed to the public. The weekend offers a multitude of tours, programs and workshops that enables participants to explore new neighborhoods and experience New York City’s architectural gems. Best of all, all programs and sites are free of charge. Visit OHNY for a complete list of programs and sites.
Of particular interest to Marine Parkers, the Hendrick I. Lott House will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 12 – 4 PM. Reservations are not required and admission is based on a first come, first serve basis. A panel exhibition, unique Lott family objects and archaeological discoveries from the site will be on display. The farmhouse (its earliest construction dates back to 1720) is in the process of being restored and is not yet open to the public. Once restoration is complete, the Lott House will be opened to the public as a house museum. The Lott House is located at 1940 East 36th Street between Fillmore Avenue and Avenue S. Please visit the Lott House’s website for more information on the building’s history and restoration.
