A stroll, jog, bike ride or drive down Fillmore Avenue is evidence that even in times of economic turmoil, something worthy can be given back to the community.  Perhaps likened to a modern day Works Progress Administration project, Marine Park’s Carmine Carro Community Center is steadily under construction, with a projected Summer 2010 unveiling.  The highly anticipated community center will feature multi-purpose rooms for recreational and community programs and events, bathrooms, a kitchen, administrative offices and storage space.  Furthermore, this building is doubly significant as it is the Parks Department’s first state-of-the-art “green” building, featuring solar panels, geothermal walls, and a planted roof.  Keeping in stride with Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC2030 initiatives, this building will be environmentally friendly, with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification being sought.

Although the sight of the Field House with the flagpole “rest-stop” or “meeting place” will be missed, I am excited that Marine Park is the benefactor of such an innovative and sustainable building that will surely come to be a prized community asset.

geothermal wells???? what are we suddenly in Yellowstone? Should that maybe be geothermal walls? or something else?

  2. Lisa says:

“Wells” was a typo – should be “walls.” This has been fixed, thanks for the heads up.

      From the Parks dept. website

“Geo-thermal wells will provide heating and cooling by pumping water from the aquifer through the building”
