To Mike B. – typical, brainless response of those who refuse to understand the obvious need for the church to compromise – he insults (can’t think of any good response?), others suggest the ridiculous – eg. earplugs – in other words its more appropriate to tell many homeowners to use earplugs 10 times a day, rather than the church reduce the volume and frequency of the bells. I am particularly impressed with those who think telling people to move if they don’t like it – many of us have lived here for decades, and the church didn’t seem to have suffered from the lack of “bells” for all those years, but now there are many who are suffering because of the church’s arrogance.
The church has the right to ring the bells….you anonymous just don’t get it. If you don’t want to hear church bells then I suggest you and anyone else bothered by the ringing of the bells move. Just because you lived there for decades doesn’t give you any more rights than someone who just moved in.
Look at it this way, for the past decades of lack of “bells” you got lucky.
The purpose of church bells is to do no more than “to signify the hour or the time for worshippers to go to church, perhaps to attend a wedding, funeral, or other service.” [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_bell]
Before mass communication they were the only way to gather a village together, and so might also be used for secular funcitons. It is unreasonable for a church to be exempt from noise ordinances when that church is unreasonably polluting the airwaves with bells during non-worship hours. The behavior of this church toward members of the community is simply unkind. It’s shameful that I’m even thinking about how to use the law against this church. Hey, St. Thomas Aquinas Church, ask yourselves, what would Jesus do?
I live in 37th st and Ave R, and don’t here these bells from my house. I wish I did. I do hear the ones from Holy Trinity and they are beautiful. Today I drove to St. Thomas to hear these terrible loud bells. Guess what.. I was disappointed. These bells are not loud. I was right next to the church in my car with the window open. I find it hard to believe that this guy in his house has to make the TV louder or it interupts his conversation. That is not true. So what is the reason behind trying to silence or change the bells ? Qulaity of life ? I am conducting a sound test on these bells and will be comparing this to other sounds in the neighborhood. Stay tuned as I will post the results on this page. I urge people who have no heard these bells to go there for yourself and see if this guy has an arguement. What turned me off is him running his car alarm to interfere with the religious service or blowing an air horn during mass. Whats your agenda John Russo.

I won’t sleep a wink ’til I hear the results of your little sound experiment. Make sure your hearing aid is turned on so that we get the most accurate results possible.
If your the same anonymous as the other post you are obviously a genius. Your hearing aid must be too high if you think those bells are annoying. “There are many people suffering beacause of the churchs’ arrogance.” Your kidding right ?
Oh am suffering from the bells………. poor you. Who does the bell toll for, it tolls for you my friend.
I am Catholic so I shouldn’t label this person, but I can’t help myself…
he is such a jerk, he should hide his face in shame. And yes, I will go to confession, question is, where will he go?
