House Fire at 4009 Avenue P

On Wednesday evening, at approximately 6:30 PM, a fire broke out on the second floor of a private house at 4009 Avenue P, between Kimball and Coleman Streets.  From what onlookers could discern, the family, which had young children, were able to flee the house unscathed.  It appears that the fire started in a 2nd floor children’s bedroom.  The FDNY were on the scene within minutes to put out the fire, which was extinguished rather quickly.  More news to follow as it becomes available.  Kudos to the FDNY, EMS, NYPD and other emergency vehicles who arrived on the scene within MINUTES.  And thankfully, the family was unharmed.

If anyone has further news to report, please let us know.

It’s All About YOU Now? REALLY?

Maybe it’s just the silly name that piques my interest, but “It’s All About Me Now,” located on Gerritsen Avenue off of Avenue U, has been opened for a few months now, taking up two storefronts and replacing “Roscoe’s Doggy Day Care.”  Was curious to see if anyone has been in here?  How is the merchandise?  As non-sensical as the store’s name?  However, kudos for a local business opening…hoping it does very well.

Cricket Player Struck by Lightning Makes Extraordinary Recovery

Follow-up: The Marine Park cricket player who was struck by lightning on July 26, 2009 is making an extraordinary recovery, the New York Daily News reports.  Covered by MarineParker in July, forty one year-old Stephen Gibson was struck by lightning to the left side of his face, causing his brain to bleed, damaging his lungs, kidney and liver.  After being in a three week coma following his injuries, Gibson only recently regained movement in his arms and legs and has begun to speak again.  Now being treated at the Coler-Goldwater Speciality Hospital and Nursing Facility on Roosevelt Island, we wish Mr. Gibson best wishes and continued success in his rehabilitation.

To follow up on yesterday’s post, The New York Daily News has today reported another incident involving a young female teacher at James Madison High School.  Allison Musacchio, pictured left, is under investigation for having an inappropriate relationship with a male student.

“School sources said they learned of Musacchio’s alleged antics in March, after a female James Madison student saw her ex-boyfriend’s phone number on the tenured teacher’s cell phone.

Officials found more than 200 texts and calls between the teacher and the male pupil and yanked her from the classroom, sources said. They said the amount of contact was inappropriate.

Musacchio, 31, was also investigated for having a fling with a former student but the probe was dropped because the teen was of legal age and no longer at the school, school sources said.

Attempts to reach Musacchio at her home were unsuccessful Wednesday, but she has told a neighbor the allegations were untrue.”

Today’s New York Daily News reports that two romance language teachers were tossed out of James Madison High School after being caught “undressed” in an empty classroom.  Students were watching a talent show in the auditorium when teachers Alini Brito (left) and Cindy Mauro (right) were discovered by a janitor who then informed school officials.  Both tenured teachers were removed from the school and are currently being investigated for misconduct.  Click here for the full article.

More Information: McGuinness’ Irish Gift Shop

Following up on our prior article of this topic, GerritsenBeach.net has interviewed the owner of McGuinness’ Irish Gift Shop, John McGuinness, who explains that the store is closing for a few reasons, including the economy, parking issues, and that now is just the time to go.  The store will definitely be missed…

As this will be their last holiday season, one may want to purchase some items.  All merchandise in the store is 30% off.

New Pharmacy For Avenue U and Bragg Street

It appears that a new pharmacy is coming to Avenue U between Bragg and Brigham Streets.  Almost completed, my guess is that this is a Walgreens, based on the design and materials. Additionally, it looks very similar to the Walgreens that opened less than two months ago on Coney Island Avenue and Avenue W, featured on Sheepshead Bites.

According to the Department of Buildings, a parking lot with 27 spaces will be provided.  Due to a recent text amendment by the Department of City Planning, this parking lot must be landscaped.

Although I wish more “neighborhood serving” businesses would come to the area, it is understandable that in this economic climate only large corporations and franchises would be financially able to open a new store.

A glimpse of the Empire State Building

Despite the MESS that is the ongoing re-construction of the track/station at the Kings Highway stop on the B/Q line, I did manage to find some semblance of beauty and order with this shot of the Empire State Building.  On a clear day, the view is much more vivid.  One can also see the Empire State Building from the most southern portion of Marine Park (the park itself) and from the Belt Parkway.
