Today’s Daily News reports that Sheepshead Bay residents are in vehement opposition to a proposed mosque in their area. Situated on a residential street, many residents claim that the building presents a security issue in addition to bringing undue noise and traffic to the quiet street. The building, which is to be affiliated with the Muslim American Society, would include a prayer hall and a community center with youth programs. For the complete article, click here.

A house of worship doesn’t belong on a residential street.
As to PC nonsense, enough. If I owned a home next door, I would be furious at this intrusion. And it is a safety issue. Yemen-hasn’t that tolerant and peace-loving nation been in the news lately for their wonderful, thoughtful and inclusive beliefs toward America? (sarcasm off).
Tolerance is a two way street, not a one way suicide pact. Let us all know when Islam respects any other faith or allows distribution of the Bible or allows churches and synagogues to be built and to convert Muslims.
Meantime Lew Fidler might want to read up about all the wonderful things imams say to their flocks every Friday about Jews and Christians before he starts sterotyping his own constituents. Like Major Hassan’s imam or the 96th Street imam, both of whom fled to the diversity and tolerance of Yemen after preaching hatred here.
Walk through Midwood.
There is a Jewish Shuul on every block, in almost every house. It’s horrible living here and they destroy the parking situation.
Houses of Worship have no place anywhere, much less residential blocks.
Which was exactly my experience living across the street from a Mill Basin synagogue. Perfectly nice people, but they parked where ever they wanted doubleparked all the time. No one cared if you had to go to work. Apparenly they never budgeted to buy land for a parking lot. Heck, my landlord was a rabbi to a different temple and he and his wife got into arguments with these inconsiderate people more than anyone else.
To further complicate matters I predict that a Mosque next to a Public School will illicit violence. No, not the Muslims, but lets be real here, of the hundreds of kids that go to that school that already start fights with one another, how much do you want to bet that one kid is going to pick up on his parents negative feelings and react violently. I wouldn’t even put it past a parent to go crazy and get violent because of the parking issue when trying to pick up their kids or any other trigger.
On the other hand it could also attract vandals to the area who want to make an example of the Mosque and that will put everyone in the area in danger just by being in close proximity.
It’s just a bad bad bad idea. The Muslims deserve a place to pray but they should respect the community they moved too and wait for a better time and a better place.
I understand where you’re coming from but they’re is a large number of Muslim families and growing and we have no place of worship in our local area. We need this Mosque and center to teach our kids our religion.
Mr Yhaya
With all do respect you need no such thing. You can teach your children their culture and history and religion in the privacy of your homes. You do not need a big institutionalized building.
Think of the reality of the situation. Now is not the best time in our history to call attention to yourselves. You’re making yourselves targets. While most of us are content to just let everyone keep to themselves and ignore one another there ARE people in this community and outside this community will take your expansion personally. These radical individuals will look for any excuse to “take the fight to the enemy”. You risk inflaming these people.
You’re putting yourselves and everyone else in the community at risk. There’s also the slim chance that you’re new Mosque will not only attract the bad elements of our own society but of yours as well. While the majority of you are peaceful and want to worship in peace just like everyone else there IS a portion of your community that uses the rest of you to hide in plain sight.
Please understand, you’re simply creating a target for both extreme groups. Nobody wants that.
From a personal standpoint I strong feel that religion has no place in an enlightened society at all, but I’m not about to attack someone elses rights and freedoms, so I’ll simply say that religion is something that should be done in private and not something that she be called attention too. That’s what you’re doing.
I assure you that the Mosque wont attract any violence to the community and if it is we will let the Law Enforcement handle the situation.
There are 6 million and counting Muslim American currently living in “The land of the FREE” and 2 million Jews living here too. The Jews have NO problem at all building synagogues, but when we Muslims want to build a mosque we have to take all this crap from the people that hate Muslims. The Jews have much more places of worship then we do and we are triple the amount of them and we get all this crap from these people.
Yhayh
You cannot speak for everyone. In the current climate a new Mosque in the area will attract extremists that will get eventually lose their control and get violent and when someone does eventually lose their marbles with anger the people caught in the middle will be your worshipers and the innocent residents of that block.
6 Million Muslims in the entire country has nothing to do with building one Mosque in this particular community. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere i’m also against Jews and Christians building new places of worship as well. In fact I live on a block and the building right next to mine has a Shuul on the first floor and its HORRIBLE. It was the worst thing to happen to the area.
This has nothing to do with hate, this is logistics. By comparing yourself to Jews you’re the one who starts sounding like a race baiting bigot. You cant jump around and point to one group of people and say “But they do it why can’t we”. It’s childish and pointless. Nobody should be doing it. Not them and not you.
Land of the Free is a misnomer. Your rights end when they start to impede on the rights of others. The majority of people on that block have the right to a peaceful and quiet existence.
If you want to build a Mosque there so badly do what the Jews do. Buy every other house on the block so only Muslims live there. Nobody would be left to oppose you because they were all bought out. Put your money where your mouth is.
STOP CATERING TO OUR ENIMIES WITH POLITICAL CORRECTNESS!!!!!!!! ISLAM IS A BANE TO THE CIVILIZED WORLD. THE BILL OF RIGHTS APPLIES TO AMERICAN CITIZENS ONLY!!!!! GET TOUGH AMERICA STOP THINKING HUMAN BOMBS ARE WILLING TO COMPRIMISE……W A K E U P
American Citizens lol i had a good laugh when i read that, sweety if u do a little research u will learn that not all muslims are immigrant idiot many musliums inculding me were born in this beautiful country, which make us born citizens and we have as much rights as u do i see no difference between ur rights and mine. Every religion has there extremists, and just because muslim extremists do horrible things in the name of Allah doesnt mean they r right, killing one innocent soul is a huge sin and god will surely punish them in the hereafter.
Arthur B. I really do thank your words of TRUTH. & REALITY check for Mr. Bugg, there aren’t just Yemeni’s living in Sheepshead (this would be a Arab-American Palestinian citizen speaking, F.Y.I.) & if you ask me honestly, all I smell is a little bit of racism, rather then concern for your community, agreed? Or is this “loyal concern” you’re way of beating around the bushes?
For your audacity to say Yemen hasn’t been that “Peace-loving Nation” it says to be on the news lately, that’s just contradictory. Did you forget about how sweet & peaceful Israel has been? Unlike Yemen, who’s problems just started….Israel’s “kindness and sincerity” has been going on for decades. My own next-door neighbor happened to be from Israel, and we get along as if he were part of the family.
You criticizer’s haven’t even given us a chance to show how respectful us Muslims are, all we get is cynical disliking neighbors like you, and just for a little nudge, for the lack of your information…..when we go to the MASJID, every friday we learn about respect, and religion, war-peace, and courtesy for our neighbors. Instead of you accusing our Imam “stereotyping his own constituents” why dont you come for yourself, and hear with your own ears what exactly he preaches.
We just want the same freedom as all other temples, churches, and synagogue’s do. Our siblings, childrens, and parents know our limits to not cross, and we know our line of respect. Yes we plan to build it on a residential street, but it’ll be just as if we’re walking into any other person’s home. When we go to the mosque, all of the our misdeeds stop at the door, and it becomes just one’s self and ALLAH. You wont have to worry about raised voices, because for one, thats forbidden in the mosque.
Muslims who started off wanting to build the mosque have put all their money and effort into planning it, we work hard for our money, just as everyone else does. Bugg, you should really think before you speak and im not asking for your change of mind, or better yet your PERMISSION to how this community will be runned. All I’m asking is for you to back your “facts” up before you speak.
Why would you want to build a mosque on a residential block? Thats how neighborhoods are destroyed and quality of life goes down. Who wants to live on a residential block that has a temple, mosque or church pop up in the middle of the block next to peoples homes. Why not build on a corner or a commercial area like ocean ave or coney island ave… etc…. Communities have certain associations that ensure residents abide by certain standards that are put forth by the residents that live there. These residents also belong to and can join that association. Unfortunately times have changed today. We are at war with radical muslim fanatics who want to kill us and destroy our country. There are lots of things forbidden in mosque but time and time again we see them being used to preach hate and terrorism, hide weapons, and use them for sanctuaries for terrorist. This is reality.
Its a place of worship. Us Muslims will bring peace to the Sheepshead Bay area. We have the right to build where ever it is legal to build and you have NO say about it.
the radical christians that bomb abortion clinics, the kkk, and the aryan republican army? i mean if your going to say the radical muslims that are at overseas FIGHTING for there LAND, if your going to talk like that TONY then i suggest you to single out every terrorist attack ever done in the united states history and not just the ones done by “radical muslims”…your such a JOKE!!
Susie we are at ware with islamic facist terrorist who attached our country. radical christians, kkk (do they still exist, this isnt 1875 anymore) and what is an aryan republic army ? are they attacking us or blowing up planes or working on ways to attack our country. Assuming you are a citizen and live in this country. What radical muslims are fighting for their land ? You make no sense. What war are radical muslims fighting for their land, please educate me. I am not talking about Palestine and Jews, I am talking about the scum that attacked us on 9/11 and continue to try to destroy us each day. Wether you like it or not they are or Islamic radicals, and fascist. I am not talking about the peace loving, kind hearted, U.S. loving muslims like you. We are at WAR dont forget that,,,, we wont.
Tony you seriously need to EDUCATE YOURSELF!! this is america the land of the free!! so we can belive what we want!! have ever went to a mosque?? if you did you would NOT have said half of the bullshit you wrote!! islam has NOTHING to do with 9/11!! you need to know more about the religon before you go say something like that…i am a PROUD MUSLIM AMERICAN!! you need understand that people have beliefs and you need to respect that! first off if you took the time to know more about islam i promise you, you wouldnt say something like,” we see them being used to preach hate and terrorism, hide weapons, and use them for sanctuaries for terrorist.” thats A LIE! honestly tony i really feel bad for you and i will pray that you would be less ignorant and more open..p.s. take my adivice and LEARN ABOUT ISLAM!!
Susie glad your a proud MUSLIM AMERICAN. I am a proud AMERICAN. Here are some articles you can read about mosque. I know these are not ala mosque but dont be so shocked as everything I said can be validated. Dont feel bad for me, feel bad and pray for the American soldiers fighting terrorism overseas to protect you in the good old USA.

“Problems” with Yemen started back 1991 and, if I recall correctly, 17 American sailors on the USS Cole were killed by suicide bombers who happened to be from Yemen.
First of all it was in 2000 and every single country in the world has good and bad people in it !!! Its was an extremists that bombed the USS Cole in Aden, Yemen not the government!!
You’re right. It was Oct 2000 and Clinton was President.
You are totally 100% correct.
Please do not immediately cry racism. While there ARE certainly individuals who are against a Mosque in the area for less then honorable reasons such as racism that is simply not the case for everyone.
Me personally, I’m opposed to organized religion from an intellectual standpoint but I still support your right to worship in peace. Everyone deserves that right. I also think that right ends at your personal property. For the record I’m also against any new Churches or Synagogues being built. Ideally all such buildings would be removed or re-purposed but that’s not realistic, so I’m left to opposing any new construction.
When you claim that the community is against you because of rasim you’re making the SAME generalization others make when they call every Muslim a terrorist. The people of the community simply do not want the disruption that would be caused by a Mosque in the area. It’s a major inconvenience and there is simply no room for it. The construction alone is going to be a major problem. When it’s finished the parking issues will take over as every Muslim in the area flocks to the Mosque.
Take for example Coney Island Ave between Foster and Ave H, there are a few Mosques there if I’m not mistaken and the disruption is ENORMOUS. Especially on Muslim Holidays when practically the entire street needs to be closed. There are constantly double parked and illegally parked vehicles (and I’m not just talking about the trucks making deliveries across the street, those are bad enough) which cause massive bottle necks.
Please understand, this is simply the wrong place to build a mosque. If you force this on the community they will all turn against you and they will not welcome you. Eventually the less mature members of the community will turn violent, it’s a sad truth about human nature.
Perhaps you can buy some land over on Coyle Street. It’s very deserted over there. I’m sure you guys can buy some property and build a Mosque that’s out of the way. Or better yet, there are numerous plots of land for sale on Knapp Street between Ave Y and Harkness along the water. That would be a perfect place for your Mosque because there is plenty of parking.
How about next to the Daycare Center on Ave X and Knapp. Half that building is still vacant. Or even across the street. Joe Sitt has done NOTHING with that water front property. If you guys bought that you could build your mosque there and even rehabilitate the waterline and I’m sure the community would rally behind you.
Nobody is saying you shouldn’t build in Sheepshead Bay at all. They are just saying not on a residential street next to a public school. It’s simply the wrong place logistically.
To Reality Check
Please let me know if it will be the Muslim community and only 3 or 4 house around 3-4 blocks are own by Jews and the will try to build synagogue what your reaction will be. Because on the street you want to build mosque only 4-5 houses from more than 300 houses belong to not Muslims and about 30-40 Muslims are living in 3-4 blocks around planned mosque. Wht if it will be 100% another way where Muslims are dominated. Tall me. I am fro that area only half a block.
Really Tony? Do you really see Mosque’s preaching terrorism and hatred? That’s interesting……….why don’t you show me where exactly you see that going on? Since you’re so sure, show me….you DID witness with you’re own eyes and ears right?! I’d love to see for myself.
I know that you’re concern is about building it in a residential area, but I don’t remember hearing any concerns about the synagogue just a couple of blocks away? I don’t see any concerns about the one’s in Midwood, Fort Hamilton pkwy, and Ocean pkwy. Aren’t those residential areas too? I just don’t see the big problem, I always go to the Mosque in Bay Ridge and I assure you I have not seen any problems thus far, whether its about Parking spaces, or causing traffic. If this City had no problems with building other religious buildings, then do not start the discrimination now. Sheepshead Bay has a large spread of Muslims growing, whether its liked by people or not. We should get the same justice as everyone else does, end of story.
Hatred is being taught in many U.S. mosque. Unfortunate but true.
see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HbMjvsr4Co
You call that Real dude? Be serious … all it is, is a pathetic over-used botox low life who finds a way of entertaining people like you
“quote…quote….quote…..” lol thats all she was saying. Do some REAL research tonight and find me a MUSLIM speaking with their own mouths teaching hatred.
TRY AGAIN PAL.
Look up Mahdi Bray on the internet…
This guy is one of the leaders of the Muslim American Society, organization behind the project, (you can see him on their web site) Here is the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBIcfigtbEU
Parking is an issue, no matter what religion a house of worhsip represents. It means residents get inconvenienced by worshippers, and that means quality of life and property values drop. I beleive the same thing would be true if my neighbors here in MP decided to build a synagogue down the block without taking parking into account.
As to the wonders of the peacefulness of Islam and it’s adherents, quit while you’re behind, Mr. Check. You don’t get more than equal justice unde the law, whcih is what this PC nonsense of bullying evryone else while expecting us to ignore REALITY is on your part and the cowards in the media.
I could tell you much more about the friends and neighbors who didn’t come home from work one September Tuesday. Leave it at that.
Lol that would be Ms. Check to you, buddy. And you can save all that nonsense for someone just as amaurotic as you are. First it was about Islam, then Yemen, now we’re speaking Reality? Obviously you’ve got you’re Fantasy of life as far away as possible from true REALITY.
Speaking of the friends who didnt come home in September (which was unfair to them), should I remind you of the thousands of muslim families who dont even HAVE a home to go to? Or the Palestinians who’ve been kicked out their home and still to this day, 50 years later, still can’t have back? The act of 9/11 was not done by true muslims, so the fall of one group of people shouldnt be reflected on every other Muslim person trying to faultlessly go on with their lives and their beliefs.
So as you say, leave it at that. Just know at the end of the day, our fight to build this new Mosque and our effort to keep our religion going on through generations will not stop. =)
Thank You very much. You are 100% correct and every one is entitled to their place of worship. EVERYONE!!!
Yes, everyone is entitled to their house of worship but when that house of worship is pushing to be placed on a quiet block in Brooklyn why are the residents of that block portrayed as being racist or intolerant because they don’t want to deal with all the crap that comes with any house of worship….emphasis on any?
Yeah but haven’t u seen a place of worship of any religion on a quiet Brooklyn block. Why can’t we do the same? We Muslims only like to bring peace to one another. We will do our best to be quiet, but we can’t do this when we get all this hate from you people.
I dig what you are saying about the Palestinians but your second paragraph troubles me because you are implying that the 9/11 murders are somehow justified. You use the word “unfair” to somehow rationalize the fact that people of all faiths and nationalities were obliterated. Puff. Gone. Never to be seen again. Unfair??? Are you kidding me?
A Mosque is a place of worship nothing else more. Everyone is entitled for a place for exercise their own religion!!!!
Im telling you it is UNFAIR what’s been done to All the people who were killed on 9/11, yes obliterated but last time i checked isnt that what happens to people who pass away? Its messed up what happened but if you’re so sympathetic about them being gone, then that means i should also be holding grudges on every single MUSLIM person whos been either slaughtered, shot, starved, or beatened to death in the last 50 years.
Lol you have nothing more to say, so u criticize my choice of using the word “unfair” …. get a grip pal. Last time I checked this discussion was about people like you having a problem with our right of practicing Islam’s religion in our community further more. Apparently, you wanna take it further but that’s not my obligation.
The real Muslims don’t encourage terrorism. I am sorry for the lives lost in the tragic date on 9/11.
Mosque don’t preach terrorism and hatred to the 1.8 billion followers. We only preach about the right way of life!!!
Don’t even know where to begin. About 9/11-scary you’re here. There are planes leaving JFK every day back to the wonderful, pluralistic tolerant place you came from. Don’t hesitate to get a one way ticket today. Let us know when they allow Christianity, Bhuddism and Judaism peaceful days there.
It’s not racist to have on street parking spots on your block.
Yhayh and Reality Check have in a few posts done more to damage their cause than anything anyone else could ever do. Unless this is someone’s attempts at irony and sarcasm.
Hey Bugg,
I think that your useless!!!!
Hey, yhayh, that’s his/her opinion. You can do better than than that.
I think you need to learn some grammar and spelling such as the word “you’re”(the contraction of “you are”) rather than the possessive “”your” before posting on a messageboard devoted to your (that’s possessive, by the way!) would be new neighbors. Triple exclamations, wow!Did you watch too many Adam West “Batman” episodes? What about my useless? I din’t lose it, did I?
LOL, What the hell does grammer have to do with ones devotion to his or her neighborhood.
Thank u Anonymous
Whew… some debate.
First of all, we’ll have additional reporting on this story on Sheepshead Bites (http://www.sheepsheadbites.com) tomorrow morning. So check it out.
Where to start. I won’t be addressing the “They’re gonna blow us up” bullshit. My only suggestion to people who worry about security is to go make friends with a Muslim and get a grasp for what the religion is. Extremists come in all colors and creeds – just because we’re at war with a fringe that can loosely be described as “Muslim” doesn’t mean all Muslims ought to be held accountable. I’d hate to be held accountable for everything a white guy does. Or a Jew does. Or an American does. (Speaking of being an American, we’re supposed to hold ourselves to a higher standard. We’re at war with Al-Qaeda and terrorists, not Muslims.)
Now, Arthur, my dear writer: I’m disappointed in you on the point you make about Muslims making themselves “targets,” and that this is “not the time,” et cetera. Just as we ought not live in fear of terrorism, they ought not live in fear of ethnic retribution. We’re neighbors, and telling them to hold off because it’s not the time is a lot like what people said when they didn’t want to get involved in WW2 or the American civil rights movement. I suggest a reading of “Letter from Birmingham Jail.”
Lastly, this debate is moot. Organizers have a right to build it where it is. It MAY cause traffic and parking issues, but that’s yet to be proven. A lot of religious institutions do cause parking problems – others don’t. Just two blocks away from this location there is a church sandwiched between houses on a one-way street. I asked a neighbor if it – or the bell that rings every hour – was a problem at all. He said no. Ditto for the church on East 16th near Gravesend Neck Rd. There are numerous examples of religious institutions being good neighbors, and often they raise property values.
If it DOES cause parking and traffic problems, neighbors can pass on complaints to local pols and the community board to mediate the situation. This happens more frequently than you think, with the outcome dependent on those involved. In this case, the mosque has already decided to refrain from the 5 per day call to prayer in order to accommodate the residents. That’s a good sign.
Don’t forget to check out our report tomorrow morning on SheepsheadBites.com!
You response is antectodal rather than factual. No matter-the mosques on 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge and Ditmas Avenue in Flatbush are overrun with doubleparkers every Friday.
ANd the focus should be about parking. This is a low rise outer boro neighborhood with free on street parking, which has always been a huge selling point for people buying and owning one and two family houses. That’s a selling point, and it keeps property values high. If that isn’t currently taken into account in zoning laws regarding houses of worship, it should be. If our elected representatives and the supposed guardians in the local media would rather wax PC poetic nonsense than discuss another screwing over of the little guy, we should vote them out and not buy their papers, respectively.
EPIC FAIL. And typical. But at least no one is calling you a racist, and that’s what matters to you.
http://www.adl.org/main_Anti_Israel/Muslim_American_Society.htm?Multi_page_sections=sHeading_1
LOL LOL LOL …. nice try
I don’t think safeguarding rights is PC. However, I think calling everything that HAPPENS to side with a minority “PC” is a pretty dick move.
My response is anecdotal. True.
So is yours. True.
I never said this won’t cause traffic or parking issues. I agree – those things need to be monitored. Very closely. And protected well. That really is the most important thing here.
But as the law stands now, religious facilities can be built in residential neighborhoods as of right. That means no one can legally challenge so long as they follow local zoning ordinances. And since it has yet to be proven whether or not this will fall on the side of my anecdotes or yours, nothing can be done until a problem occurs.
For better or worse, there exists no preventative measures that I’m aware of to ensure there will be no problems with parking or traffic. You make a good point in saying it should be taken into account with zoning laws. I’d be interested to see what such legislation looks like.
“I won’t be addressing the “They’re gonna blow us up” bullshit.”
Some the bombers who particpated in each the 1993 bombing, the 9/11 bombing and the Atlantic Avenue plot all worshipped at the mosque on Atlantic Avenue which was led by the blind sheik, Omar Abdul Rhaman, who’s now in jail for life in a supermax prison for the 1993 bombing. Rhaman used his defense attorney, Lynn Stewart, to pass discovery materials back to his cohorts in the Middle East. The Atlantic Avenue bombing was foiled only because one of the bombers got cold feet and practically tackled a befuddled rookie cop with the information. The plotters explained that Atlantic Avenue station was targetd because so many Jews live in Brooklyn that it seemed like a good way to kill the maximum number of Jews.
That mosque is still there today with it’s bookstore, all spewing hate of America. When you can point to any house of worship in Brooklyn(or anywhere in America) with history like that, get back to us. Ignorance is bliss.
I think i spotted the perfect location for the Mosque if the Muslim Community would consider it. The Clean O Rama building on Nostrand Ave between Neck and V. It’s an existing structure so they wouldn’t have to build a new one. It’s a pretty big building that could most likely be retrofitted or altered to suit their needs. It has quite a few parking spaces and if they asked nice they could most likely borrow/rent some more at pre-determined times from Perry’s, S&D and the Kings Bay Y. In fact being right across from a Jewish Center like the Y offers ample opportunity to hold various unity events between the two.
From the perspective of public transportation it’s a better option then Voorhies and East 28th. They’d still have access to the B36 and B44 but also to the B3.
I dunno, maybe I’m nuts but this location seems to resolve every issue the community could possibly think of to argue against the Mosque.
why is this topic being debated and discussed on this marine park website? sheepshead bay is closer to gerritsen beach than it is to marine park.
by all means, i am very sorry about the situation – i personally would not want a house of worship of any kind going up next to me, on my residential block.
but in any case – what about some marine park news? is our neighborhood really that uneventful?
This is being being debated and discussed here because MP folks don’t live in a bubble. I want to know what is happening in MP as well as the surrounding neighborhoods.
bagles, I didn’t think I was living in a bubble but while listening in to Marty Golden’s Telephone Town hall last evening, I caught the end of a conversation regarding the units opposite MP Junior High. I believe the caller and Golden discussed the owner was foreclosed and as tenants vacate, the units are no longer being rented. This is leading to a rodent issue….. I would appreciate an update on this issue which is really close to home
Anonymous,
Thanks for the tip! MarineParker depends on its loyal residents and observers for great news tips and info such as this…I will look into this matter and hopefully post some new information regarding it.
Thanks,
Lisa
Anonymous,
Can you please tell me how you were able to participate in the Telephone Town Hall? I have contacted Marty’s office but have yet to receive a response. This is the kind of thing MPer would like to be involved in in the future…
If anyone has further information on this, or how to become involved in these Telephone Town Hall mtgs, please let me know!
Thanks
Lisa
What residents need to know about Islam:
http://kwelos.tripod.com/religion_of_peace.htm
bagels, i am a resident of marine park and i do not live in a bubble. might i offer that you read other blogs that pertain to our surrounding neighborhoods. this topic is (accurately) being discussed on sheepsheadbites.com. it shouldn’t really be on this blog that is “dedicated to marine park brooklyn,” as voorhies ave is not in marine park. to the keeper of this site, maybe you can post general links to other brooklyn neighborhood blogs/websites on the top or side of your main page for your readers to use.
To respond to this, MarineParker will be undergoing some site maintenance and redesign in the near future and we plan to include links to other great local blogs – thanks for the suggestion!
Another story of interest might be what’s happening on the nature trail around the salt march. There’s new fencing and a construction trailer and they’ve cleared quite a bit of land.
I asked someone with a Dept of Parks outergarment. Said it was part of the Army Corps of Engineers project involving “MauMau”/White Island. I must say that it didn’t sound logical, and I found it hard to believe. So much for all their “Forever Wild” signs, and needing a permit to launch a kayak from the creek. Maybe it was better off when it was full of stripped cars and old washing machines. For whatever reason, there were more wildlife down there then.
If you go down there now with the intent of walking around the trail you’ll see that the path is gated off. The signs they recently installed indicate that the activity is due the Army Corp of Engineers’ project to restore the salt marsh.
“The Army Corps of Engineers will be taking aim shortly at very specialized trespassers in a portion of southern Brooklyn, the invasive phragmites plants that have taken over portions of the Salt Marsh area of Marine Park.”
Looks like the Army Corps of Engineers are declaring war on the phragmites:

Pix had the same article i sent this letter to them
Dear pix news,
I am angry about your Battle Over Brooklyn Mosque Plan Article (April 23, 2010). I dislike the way the jewish lady in the pink shirt had said that muslims are terrorists. It is unfair that the action one group of people the (Alquidas) are used against all muslims. Its not like we make fun of Nazis or Jews or any other religion. I though no one was perfect. Is this really a free country? I can’t believe how much hatred this woman had shown against us Muslims. Everyday we try to fit in, but we aren’t accepted as who we are, no we’re just one of those terrorists. This is so unfair. And I’m sure that what that woman had said about Muslims was pretty much illegal. I am so disappointed that my now ex-favorite show would ever think of putting up such an article. Which makes me wonder is Pix against Muslims?
