Essentially the entire northern side of Avenue U between Hendrickson Street and Flatbush Avenue is for sale/for rent (with the exception of the the Verizon dealer).  Is this a prime opportunity for useful stores/shops to come to the neighborhood or just more of the same type of useless stores that grace most of Flatbush Avenue?

Mom and Pop Free WI-FI cafe/bakery, anyone?

It’s going to be another bunch of useless stores, starting with the Verizon store. How many cellphone stores do we need? It’s ridiculous.
Parking is terrible at that spot so no store will be able to survive.
    Useless, useless, useless.

  2. Hahah, us neighborhood bloggers and our demands for wi-fi coffee shops and used book stores (that’s what I always ask for).

I’m starting to think the volume of cell phone stores is a Southern Brooklyn epidemic. They’re just everywhere, and I can’t understand how they make money. On Sheepshead Bay Road (a three block stretch) there are 6 sushi joints, at least 5 or 6 cell phone shops I can think of, several wedding shops, and a handful of pharmacies. Oh, and hair/nail salons.

Between that, I’d say there are about 10 unique storefronts. That’s pretty sad. The cool thing I’ve been noticing is that some really cool shops are opening up on side streets or avenues that really weren’t known for retail shopping.

If you keep walking south along Flatbush you have the mini mall that has a large parking lot. There used to be a gym and a Duane Reade that have since gone out of business. I think the bank is still there. Also, that large Midas on the corner went belly up a while ago and the property is sitting idle.

Looks like a prime location for one more “get your nails done” store as apparently there can’t be enough of those places around.
