Crime Spree: Mill Basin Civic Association Takes Cue from Marine Park Civic Association

As discussed on MARINEPARKER  last week, the recent rise in crime has had many local citizens alarmed, and rightfully so.  However, these crimes are not just central to Marine Park, as Mill Basin has been targeted as well.  Last month, MPCA President Greg Barruso told the 63rd Precinct:

There was an armed robbery on Avenue S and East 37th Street last week where three 17-year-old kids were held up and they took their money and jewelry,” he said. “I’m not happy that there’s been nine robberies since November. I want to know, what are you doing about it? You have no arrests, you have no descriptions.

At last week’s Mill Basin Civic Association, Lieutenant Robert Haley had very similar concerns.  With both local neighborhoods now being seen as easy targets, its important for neighbors to be vigilant and if something appears to be suspicious, call it in to the 63rd Precinct.

In addition, the next MARINE PARK CIVIC ASSOCIATION meeting will be held on Tuesday February 23rd at 8:00 PM in the P.S.222 Auditorium – these issues NEED to be addressed.

Snow Day Photographs

I braved today’s weather to go around the neighborhood and take some “snow pictures.”  Snow can definitely be a nuisance at times, but it sure is pretty!

Neighbors Watch Out For One Another…

Thank you to Alexandra for e-mailing MarineParker concerning this morning’s shooting as well as some other occurrences in our  neighborhood:

I was just reading 1010wins.com and found this article quite alarming:

http://www.1010wins.com/Cops–Brooklyn-Woman-Shot-Outside-Marine-Park-Home/6287525

I thought you guys may want to research the situation and post it on your site(s).

Also, the Kings Courier reported several burglaries in last week’s police blotter, one of which near PS 222 around 10/11 pm.  Supposedly a man was held at gun point.

As an avid reader of both GerritsenBeach.net and MarineParker.net, I suggest that you please encourage your readers/viewers to remain alert and vigilant while walking around our neighborhoods.

Great advice!  If anyone has other tips or concerns, please let us know!

New York Times: City Reneges on Deal for Wyckoff-Bennett Homestead

Courtesy of Wikipedia

This past weekend’s New York Times Metropolitan section reported that Parks Department negotiations to purchase the Wyckoff-Bennett Homestead and turn it into a house museum have stalled.  In 1999, the city offered $2 million for the house and its historic contents, among them a sword etched with the royal crown and initials for George Rex III and windowpanes with the initials of two Hessian soldiers who stayed there during the Revolution.¹  In addition, the current owners, the Monts, would have been able to live there rent-free provided this deal went through.

However, the Department of Citywide Administrative Services has now offered the Monts considerably less than originally promised and a deal is no longer close to being done.  I sincerely hope this deal gets done because this treasure of a house deserves to be a public space for all history buffs to marvel at.

Rodent Infestation Topic of Conversation During Senator Golden’s Telephone Town Hall Meeting

Thank you to reader “Anonymous” for the following information:

Comprising 78 buildings with 136 units, “Marine Park Luxury Rentals” was the topic of conversation during Senator Marty Golden’s Telephone Town Hall meeting earlier this week.  According to the conversation, there have been complaints of rodent infestation since Hoti Enterprises/Hoti Realty has foreclosed on these properties.  However, the units are now under new ownership so hopefully this problem will be ameliorated shortly.

Any news/updates to report on this story?  Let us know!

Sheepshead Bay Residents Fear Planned Mosque

Today’s Daily News reports that Sheepshead Bay residents are in vehement opposition to a  proposed mosque in their area.  Situated on a residential street, many residents claim that the building presents a security issue in addition to bringing undue noise and traffic to the quiet street.  The building, which is to be affiliated with the Muslim American Society, would include a prayer hall and a community center with youth programs.  For the complete article, click here.

“War of the Bells” House Acknowledges MarineParker

Strolling through the neighborhood, I noticed that the house on Coleman Street that has gotten much publicity over the past few months due to its public displays opposing St. Thomas Aquinas ringing the church bells every hour, has acknowledged MarineParker’s role in publicizing this battle which has become a hotbed of controversy, chock full of stinging discussion.

Additionally, in an act of solidarity, a neighbor has hung a sign in support of decreasing the frequency of the church bells.

House Fire at 4009 Avenue P

On Wednesday evening, at approximately 6:30 PM, a fire broke out on the second floor of a private house at 4009 Avenue P, between Kimball and Coleman Streets.  From what onlookers could discern, the family, which had young children, were able to flee the house unscathed.  It appears that the fire started in a 2nd floor children’s bedroom.  The FDNY were on the scene within minutes to put out the fire, which was extinguished rather quickly.  More news to follow as it becomes available.  Kudos to the FDNY, EMS, NYPD and other emergency vehicles who arrived on the scene within MINUTES.  And thankfully, the family was unharmed.

If anyone has further news to report, please let us know.
