Crime Spree: Mill Basin Civic Association Takes Cue from Marine Park Civic Association

As discussed on MARINEPARKER  last week, the recent rise in crime has had many local citizens alarmed, and rightfully so.  However, these crimes are not just central to Marine Park, as Mill Basin has been targeted as well.  Last month, MPCA President Greg Barruso told the 63rd Precinct:

There was an armed robbery on Avenue S and East 37th Street last week where three 17-year-old kids were held up and they took their money and jewelry,” he said. “I’m not happy that there’s been nine robberies since November. I want to know, what are you doing about it? You have no arrests, you have no descriptions.

At last week’s Mill Basin Civic Association, Lieutenant Robert Haley had very similar concerns.  With both local neighborhoods now being seen as easy targets, its important for neighbors to be vigilant and if something appears to be suspicious, call it in to the 63rd Precinct.

In addition, the next MARINE PARK CIVIC ASSOCIATION meeting will be held on Tuesday February 23rd at 8:00 PM in the P.S.222 Auditorium – these issues NEED to be addressed.

UPDATE: 3512 Quentin Road Adds Additional Story

To follow up our original post about this pending development on Quentin Road and East 36th Street (former site of Herr’s), it appears that beams have been erected in order to construct an additional story to this 8,500 SF one-story building.  Approved on November 18, 2009, the application proposes to convert the existing cellar and first floor to offices and to erect a new second floor.

In November, MarineParker reported that these plans were originally disapproved by the Department of Buildings.  I surmised that the addition of a second story violates the site’s allowable FAR (the site in fact is currently at 1.0 FAR – the maximum for an R3-2/C1-2 district), as referenced on the Department of City Planning’s mapping tool.  However, this application has been approved for a second story of 5,077 SF, which will most likely be pitched or set back to allow for the sky exposure plane.  Additionally, if one looks to the adjacent one-story building on the corner of Quentin Road and East 35th Street, there is an additional second story set back from the street that is not completely visible from the street.  Perhaps this addition would resemble its neighbor.

Furthermore, the building permit states that this site will be used for an “Ambulatory Diagnostic and Healthcare Treatment Facility,” with the building increasing from 14 to 29 feet high, over twice its height.

Perhaps Councilman Fidler, Marine Park Civic Association or Community Board 18 should become involved in someway?

DSC_6281

[Marine Park Civic]

Marty Golden can sure throw a party!

Complete Photo Gallery

This Mid-Summer celebration was the 1st annual celebration, presented by State Senator Martin Golden and sponsored by Marine Park Hardware and the Marine Park Civic Association. It was scheduled to be a two day event Saturday ended up being the nicest.

There were great food vendors cooking up and serving: BBQ’ed fresh corn, gryos, sausage and peppers and everything chicken and steak. Uncle Louie G’s ices was serving their ices.

Inflatable rides by (Lifetime Vending and Amusements) and real carnival games kept the kids busy, while the family shopped at long line of vendors selling their wares.

Residents Oppose New Day Care Center on E38th

1658 East 38 St is an attached home between Quentin and Avenue P is currently on the market but currently in contract.

To date, their activities have included: getting a letter from Marty Golden to the NYC Dept of Health discouraging day care licensing; getting signatures for our petition from all residents on the block. They have been in contact with Lew Fidlers office and are awaiting a response.

At this point, the 80 year old woman in the attached house is ill with high blood pressure over all this.

Here is a copy of a petition that they are circulating:

The modest frame attached home at 1658 East 38 Street (between Quentin Road and Avenue P) is currently “in contract” and the soon-to-be new owners want to open a day care center. This will NEGATIVELY impact the quality of life of residents of East 38 Street and surrounding blocks. The center will bring noisy/rowdy children and mounds of trash. Parents will double and triple-park their cars during morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups, parking will become even more limited, and traffic will increase. Do we want our children playing on the sidewalk with speeding cars whizzing by? NO!!!

And the presence of a commercial business on a residential block will LOWER YOUR PROPERTY VALUES!

We, the residents of Marine Park, must take action immediately to prevent this day care center from opening and protect our block! All Marine Park residents must lend their support because if this center opens on East 38 Street, another one can open on your block!

Local elected officials and the Marine Park Civic Association have successfully stopped other day care centers from opening on Marine Park’s residential blocks. We can stop this day care center too!

There are several other day care facilities nearby so we don’t need one on East 38 Street!

Sign this petition to voice your opposition to this day care center and to tell our elected officials (City Councilman Lew Fidler, State Senator Marty Golden, State Assemblyman Alan Maisel, State Senator Carl Kruger, and Congressman Anthony Weiner) to stop this from happening!

Marine Park Civic Roundup: The Leadup to the Hebrew Language Charter School Public Hearing

DSC_4242
The May 19th Marine Park Civic association meeting the meeting was packed with parents opposed to the Hebrew Language Academy Charter School (HLA) that the city is squeezing into Marine Park Junior I.S. 278

This meeting itself wasn’t a majorly important meeting where major decisions were made. This meeting was more of a way for those opposed, to get more organized, and to be more prepared for the more important upcoming meetings, especially the Department of Education hearing on the 26th

It started off with Greg Borruso president of the Marine park Civic summing up the situation to the rather large crowd. With him explaning that the civic along with all of the local elected officials are behind them (the parents) and will stand against this “proposed” school. He explained that he along with others had met with representatives from the HLA, offering alternative locations in the district, saying to them “you’r not welcome in I.S. 278″

Borruso continued, “We have have plans for 278, 278 will be our high school and hopefully with become our preforming arts school”. The enthusastic Borruso pleaded that there would need to be at least 10 times more people that were at that this meeting to show up to the upcoming public Department of Education hearing on May 26th at Marine Park Junior High @ 6:00 pm (get there at 5:30 pm!)

Some local politicians were on hand to also explain their opposition to the school from moving in. Lew Fidler spoke against the HLA (and any charter school) but blamed mayoral control for the lack of community outreach . Lew urged everyone else to call 311 to lodge a complaint. 311 keeps track of all the complaints which will ultimately report back to the Mayor.

Alan Maisel Representative also spoke against the school.

More interesting was Congressman Anthony Weiners representative. He started to discuss a climate change bill and credit card reform that Anthony Wiener was working on, that’s when the crowd started to turn on him, The crowd obviously wasn’t there for speeches about climate change they wanted him to make a statement about the school.

When heckled by the crowd he stated that he and his office really didn’t know anything about the proposed school but if the congressmen wanted to comment he would. Borruso destroyed weiners office saying “that if the congressman would show up occasionally he would know exactly what’s going on.” Poor kid walked right into that one. Its true though, where the hell did Weiner go? Queens!

At that point Greg president made it clear to the crowd that they would be going into their normal meeting and that they need did not need to stick around. Most did leave, to have more discussion in the back of the auditorium, but others stayed to watch on.
