A glimpse of the Empire State Building

Despite the MESS that is the ongoing re-construction of the track/station at the Kings Highway stop on the B/Q line, I did manage to find some semblance of beauty and order with this shot of the Empire State Building.  On a clear day, the view is much more vivid.  One can also see the Empire State Building from the most southern portion of Marine Park (the park itself) and from the Belt Parkway.

Police Officer Loses Part of Leg in Accident on Ave U and E34th

Via NY1

A city police officer lost part of his leg Tuesday after two vehicles slammed into each other in Brooklyn.

Investigators say the vehicles were traveling in opposite directions on Avenue U in Marine Park when it happened.

According to police, a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer was traveling eastbound when it made a left turn onto East 34th Street and hit a 2008 Mazda CX7. Both vehicles then jumped the curb, forcing one to hit the plainclothes officer, who was standing with three others on the sidewalk.

The officer was taken to Kings County Hospital, where his left leg was amputated below the knee.

Residents say the intersection is known to be dangerous.

“They’ve had a lot, a lot of accidents here in the past 18 years,” said one local. “I’ve always thought that they should have a traffic light because they try to, because of the park, I think they just run through to get to the next light, which is on 36th Street.”

The officer is a five and a half year veteran and a member of the narcotics division.

Lefts in general on Avenue U are extremely dangerous, more dangerous in Marine Park because everyone is doing 50mph and if someone goes to make a left they cant judge.

E34th Street Repairs

Coming in Via Email

The 1700 block of East 34th street was surveyed yesterday by city workers. If homeowners were previously issued violations for bad/cracked/uneven sidewalks, and didn’t make the repairs, the city will now be making the repairs.

Curbs and sidewalks were marked with bright orange spray paint, denoting the areas that will be fixed within the next week or two.

Formal written notification of the work to be done was left in homeowners’ mailboxes.

If a homeowner had their sidewalk fixed but did not contact the city to remedy the violation, they must do so immediately so their address is taken off the violation list.

I am not sure if any other blocks have been assessed, but I just wanted to give the community a heads up on the matter.

Possible: Attempted Child Abduction in Marine Park

Coming in via email

On Monday evening, at around 7:00 PM, there was an attempted abduction of a child on East 35th Street and Avenue P. A man in a Silver pick-up truck asked a young boy playing outside in front of his house to come into the truck with him. The child ran into his house and the truck sped away.

Please urge your friends and neighbors to keep an eye on their children at all times.

Unfortunately, the family of this child has decided not to report this incident to the Police, so the NYPD has no official record of this occurring. Please pass along the information in this email and inform your respective memberships all the same. Thanks.

Belt Parkway Bike Path Closed

IMG_4394
Sent in Via Email

I live in Marine Park and on nice weekends like to follow the Greenway bike path along the Belt towards Queens. The last time I went I found the path closed just pass Erskine Ave. between Crossbay Blvd. I have filled out a from on the parks dept. website asking about this and when it will reopen, but as of yet no response. Do you guys have any clues to when it may open again, or who I can contact to find out?

Breaking: HLA to Go Away! Will Not Be In I.S. 278

DSC_4844

Sources tell GerritsenBeach.net that the Hebrew Language Academy has agreed NOT to use IS 278 as their temporary location. Details are still coming in, but sources claim that our own State Senator Marty Golden played “a significant role” in the negotiations with HLA, who are reportedly looking for an alternate location, possibly in conjunction with the Archdiocese of Brooklyn. Phone lines are lighting up all over Brooklyn, including mine! More news to come!
